Aquaponics at Friends went live this week!

Aquaponics at Friends went live this week! After more than a year of dedicated designing, planning, and building our own aquaponics system from scratch, this week we placed our first fish and seedlings in our system. Three gold fish (lovingly named Chester, Bartholomew and Ralph) are now in the fish tank. Sorrel, kale and lettuce seedlings (generously donated by Hopkins Center For A Livable Future’s Food Lab) are in the grow bed.

We will monitor the levels of ammonia , nitrite, and nitrate in the system. Once nitrate levels peak and we know we have a healthy colony of nitrifying bacteria in the system, we will add more goldfish. All produce will be donated to a local food bank.
